We remember going to the famous Saturday night gay party at the Roxy way back in 1990 when it began (again - of course I was only in my glitter-bedecked stroller at the time). I think it was in '90 or '91 that I had a party in the VIP room for my cable TV show "The Brenda and Glennda Show." It was when David Leigh, now passed away, Hattie and Sister Dimension started a weekly party there for freaky, bohemian types. And then the pedestrian muscle gays started going and I only dropped by once in a blue moon. There was the night I went dancing in 1992 with an ex-Nazi skinhead who was a fan of my show and queer 'zine, Pussy Grazer. Then there was the night, maybe in '96?, that my dear friend Bruce LaBruce had a party for his film, "Hustler White". Tony Ward was there. Was there also a soiree for "No Skin Off My Ass"? It's all a blur. Funny enough, less blurry was the night I saw New Order at the same venue, when it was called 1018, back in 1986. Andy Warhol was there and Karen Finley sang about shoving Belgium waffles in her granny's twat. Or something like that. And how do I stay looking so young(ish) after all these years you might ask? Plenty of sleep, a heathy diet, lots of water, exercise, no drugs, and daily ablutions in human embryo extract skincare creme bought on the black market in Red China.
Tonight, Madonna herself will be there to say goodbye to the legendary den of iniquity. Goodbye to over 16 years of pounding, monotonous beats, sausage-tight clothing, bare, steroided torsos, and K-holes. Speaking of holes, I am imagining that tonight at the stroke of 4am the entire club and its contents -- including thousands of sweaty gays and Madge -- will be sucked into a black hole like the finale of the film "Poltergeist". I can dream, can't I?
Of course, I would hope that Derek Neen -- the guardian of the Roxy's gates since the gay party started in 1990 -- will escape the carnage. If you have not yet read my book, Confessions from the Velvet Ropes, there is a lengthy section about the night I spent at the ropes of the Roxy with Derek during an especially busy Saturday night--Plus, a revealing portrait of one of New York's top doormen, the incomparable Derek Neen....not to mention the time Madonna appeared at MisShapes. (Memo to self to call Mr. Neen and see what he is planning for he future...)
Thanks for reading!
